Inouye Center for Democratic Leadership, University of Hawaii
This building, named in honor of the late senator, will house his archive and provide space for academic and public programs that further the ideals to which he dedicated his life.
Situated on an important site on the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the facility will serve as an iconic gateway to McCarthy Mall, a major nexus for both student life and the surrounding community.
At the heart of the DKI Center is the three-story Great Hall, whose flexible design will make it a gathering place for both academic discussion and community conversations. Sheltered by a generous overhanging roof, the Great Hall will open up onto a sweeping lawn that accommodates special events, providing a place for quiet contemplation as well as impassioned civic debate.
In addition to facilities for archival preservation and research, the center will include innovative classrooms, an exhibition space, and areas for civic engagement and community outreach. Sustainable features will be incorporated throughout the building, which is targeted for LEED Silver certification or higher.
