“The dream of the International African American Museum, shared by so many, will be a reality.”
— former Charleston mayor Joe Riley announcing that IAAM has raised the required $75 million
To be built on the site of historic Gadsden’s Wharf in Charleston, South Carolina, IAAM will present the experiences and contributions of Americans of African descent at the location where nearly half of all enslaved African captives brought to the U.S. disembarked and were sold. Construction of the museum, designed by Henry Cobb, will begin in the spring.
